Every 1,000 kW (or 1MW) your system generates, you create 1 SREC that can be sold. This helps you pay off your solar faster and creates passive income for you.

Class I RECs are different from SRECs in which they trade in a more liquid market with other general RECs for all types of clean energy. SRECs are specific to the solar carve-out of the RPS, and trade at a lower price.

The state of Massachusetts has transitioned from SREC programs, namely the SREC II program, to the new SMART program which is managed by the big three utilities - Eversource, National Grid and Unitil. Owners of solar facilities enrolled in the SREC markets will no longer be eligible for SREC production upon conclusion of their 10 year (or 40 quarter) lifespan, dating back to the application submission date, or the close of Q4 2027. The lifespan ends with whichever date comes first.

Once the SREC production eligibility period ends, the solar system will be eligible to produce Class I RECs. For some owners, the SMART program does not pay any credit amount due to location and oversupply of solar. If you are one of these solar owners, we'd love to help you start earning with MA Class I RECs.

For solar owners in the Class I REC program, you must use an Independent Verifier (IV) to report your readings directly to NEPOOL. We can help you with this setup through a verifier called PowerDash.
